Why a Strengthened United Nations?

In our increasingly interconnected world, cooperation is the smart, effective way to solve global problems.

The United Nations stands today as the one place where all the world’s countries come together to promote democracy, protect human rights, end poverty, meet the threat of global terrorism and move us all toward a better, safer world.

The founding principles of the United Nations – broader freedom, greater cooperation, and deeper respect – are the result of U.S. leadership. Now the United States must lead again, working with our friends and allies to strengthen the UN so it can respond to the challenges of a new century.

As all leaders do, our President needs to listen to our friends and urge them to share responsibility for solving common problems. That means working together to strengthen the United Nations. It is the smart way to get things done. It’s an investment in the security of every American. And it reflects America at its best.

United Nations September 2005 Summit

The largest gathering of world leaders in history meets on the United Nations’ 60th anniversary to focus on A Global Agenda for a 21st Century UN to make it stronger and more effective.

But change won’t happen without you. The United Nations is about people around the globe coming together to find solutions to today’s global problems. You too can be part of these solutions.

"Just as the United States took the lead in forging the consensus that led to the creation of the United Nations … we believe the United States, in its own interests, must lead the organization toward greater relevance and capability in this new era."
